Helicity at Photospheric and Chromospheric Heights

چکیده
In the solar atmosphere the twist parameter α has the same sign as magnetic helicity. It has been observed using photospheric vector magnetograms that negative/positive helicity is dominant in the northern/southern hemisphere of the Sun. Chromospheric features show dextral/sinistral dominance in the northern/southern hemisphere and sigmoids observed in X-rays also have a dominant sense of reverse-S/forward-S in the northern/southern hemisphere. It is of interest whether individual features have one-to-one correspondence in terms of helicity at different atmospheric heights. We use UBF Hα images from the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST) and other Hα data from Udaipur Solar Observatory and Big Bear Solar Observatory. Near-simultaneous vector magnetograms from the DST are used to establish one-to-one correspondence of helicity at photospheric and chromospheric heights. We plan to extend this investigation with more data including coronal intensities.

Evolution of helicity in NOAA 10923 over three consecutive solar rotations
We have studied the evolution of magnetic helicity and chirality in an active region over three consecutive solar rotations. The region when it first appeared was named NOAA10923 and in subsequent rotations it was numbered NOAA 10930, 10935 and 10941. We compare the chirality of these regions at photospheric, chromospheric and coronal heights. The observations used for photospheric and chromosp...
متن کاملStellar coronal magnetic fields and star-planet interaction
Context. Evidence of magnetic interaction between late-type stars and close-in giant planets is provided by the observations of stellar hot spots rotating synchronously with the planets and showing an enhancement of chromospheric and X-ray fluxes. Possible photospheric signatures of such an interaction have also been reported. Aims. We investigate star-planet interaction in the framework of a m...
متن کاملThe signature of chromospheric heating in Ca II H spectra
Context. The heating process that balances the solar chromospheric energy losses has not yet been determined. Conflicting views exist on the source of the energy and the influence of photospheric magnetic fields on chromospheric heating. Aims. We analyze a 1-hour time series of cospatial Ca II H intensity spectra and photospheric polarimetric spectra around 630 nm to derive the signature of the...
متن کاملNumerical Simulations of Helicity Condensation in the Solar Corona
The helicity condensation model has been proposed by Antiochos (2013) to explain the observed smoothness of coronal loops and the observed buildup of magnetic shear at filament channels. The basic hypothesis of the model is that magnetic reconnection in the corona causes the magnetic stress injected by photospheric motions to collect only at those special locations where prominences form. In th...
متن کاملChromospheric features of LQ Hydrae from Hα line profiles
We analyze the Hα spectral variability of the rapidly-rotating K1-dwarf LQ Hya using high-resolution Hα spectra recorded during April-May 2000. Chromospheric parameters were computed from the Hα profile as a function of rotational phase. We find that all these parameters vary in phase, with a higher chromospheric electron density coinciding with the maximum Hα emission. We find a clear rotation...
